The FirstRand Empowerment Foundation (FREF) is offering fully funded bursaries for the 2026 academic year designed to empower Black youth and invest in the nation’s future.
Who Should Apply?
The bursary is open to Grade 12 learners or recent matriculants (within the last 3 years) who meet the following criteria:
- • South African citizen and Black (as per BBBEE Act)
- • 21 years or younger in the first year of study
- • Achieved at least Level 5 in Mathematics
- • Accepted or provisionally accepted to a public South African university
- • Planning to pursue a first full-time undergraduate degree
- • Combined family income of R600,000 or less per year
Supported Fields of Study Include:
- • STEM & Innovation: Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Physics
- • Business & Economics: Accounting, Economics, Financial and Risk Management, Business Information Systems
- • Environment & Society: Agricultural Sciences, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, Indigenous Knowledge, Law, Psychology, Society and Sustainability
What the Bursary Covers:
- • Full tuition fees
- • Accommodation, meals, and study resources
- • A monthly stipend
- • Laptop for first-year students
How to Apply:
Submit your application via the StudyTrust online portal and upload all required documents:
- • ID copy and recent photograph
- • Grade 11 and Matric results
- • Proof of university admission
- • Income verification documents (payslips, affidavits, etc.)
