The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and the Defense Security Cooperation University (DSCU) are excited to launch the inaugural Summer Scholar Fellowship Program. This prestigious opportunity invites Ph.D. candidates worldwide to contribute policy-relevant research that enhances the understanding of security cooperation and its role in fostering global peace and stability.

Fellowship Highlights

  • Funding: Up to four Summer Scholars will receive $15,000 stipends, disbursed in three tranches based on monthly progress reports.
  • Non-residential: Fellows can work remotely over a three-month period in summer 2025.
  • Research Focus: Evidence-based, policy-relevant topics directly aligning with the missions of USIP and DSCU.
  • Dissertation Support: Scholars must submit their final committee-approved dissertation to USIP upon successful defense.
  • Priority Research Areas

Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with these critical topics:

  • Security Cooperation & Peacebuilding: Exploring how arms transfers, military training, and other strategies contribute to peace and stability.
  • Global Partnerships: Designing sustainable security cooperation programs based on shared values, contextual threat assessments, and governance.
  • Civil-Military Relations: Evaluating the role of civil society in shaping security cooperation for improved outcomes.
  • Regional & International Organizations: Enhancing the stabilizing role of global organizations through effective security cooperation.
  • Addressing Root Causes of Instability: Identifying and mitigating factors contributing to fragility beyond military equipment transfers.
  • Integrated Diterrence: Building sustainable partner defense strategies to meet evolving global threats.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. Candidates: Must be in good standing and have committee approval for their dissertation.
  • Strong Research Skills: Proven ability to conduct original research and engage in policy discussions.
  • International Applicants Welcome: Applications are open globally, but submissions must be in English.

Application Requirements

  1. Research Application: Comprehensive application addressing the competition’s criteria.
  2. Academic CV: A concise, 3-page CV highlighting relevant achievements.
  3. Recommendation Letter: A strong letter from your dissertation advisor.
