Leiden University is inviting applications for the prestigious Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (LExS) for the 2024/25 academic year. This opportunity is ideal for outstanding international students aspiring to pursue their Master’s degree in the Netherlands.

About the Scholarship
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarships are designed for top-performing international students enrolling in a full-time Master’s degree program at Leiden University, with the exception of:
- LLM (non-advanced) programs
- MSc programs at Leiden Law School.
Fields of Study
- Eligible: All fields except Law.
- Type: Partially funded scholarship.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Nationality: Open to international students outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
- Admission Requirement: Applicants must apply for admission to a Master’s program at Leiden University.
- Academic Excellence: Candidates must demonstrate exceptional academic performance (e.g., high GPA or equivalent achievements).
- Motivation Letter: Applicants must submit a motivation letter (max. 500 words), detailing their academic and personal achievements, goals, and reasons for applying.
- Application Timing: Scholarship applications must be submitted before the specified deadline. Late submissions will not be considered.
Selection Process
- Faculty Nominations: Selection committees nominate recipients within six weeks of the deadline.
- Notification: All applicants will be informed via email about the outcome:
- End of November for February intake.
- End of April for September intake.

- All countries are eligible to apply.
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship covers part of the tuition fees and is available at three levels:
- €10,000 of the tuition fee.
- €15,000 of the tuition fee.
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee.
Note: The scholarship is not fully funded. Non-EEA recipients must provide proof of sufficient funds for their student visa/residence permit.
Scholarship Duration
- The award lasts for the entire duration of the study program.
How to Apply
Follow these steps to apply for the LExS:
- Apply for Admission:
- Submit your online application for a Master’s program at Leiden University.
- Pay the applicable application fee.
- Access Scholarship Application:
- Once your program application is submitted, return to the “Apply” screen and navigate to the Scholarships section.
- If eligible, the LExS option will appear.
- Submit Motivation Letter:
- Indicate your interest in the LExS.
- Upload your motivation letter as a PDF (maximum 500 words).
- Deadline Compliance:
- Submit your application before the deadline. No changes can be made after submission.
- For multiple study programs, submit separate scholarship applications for each.
