SAFE Fellowship: A Lifeline for At-Risk Researchers

The SAFE Fellowship supports non-EU researchers facing risks such as discrimination, persecution, or violence. Open to all scientific disciplines, it offers an opportunity for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to continue their work in safe environments within the EU.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility Tracks

Track 1: Researchers Outside the EU

  • Non-EU citizens facing threats in their home country or recently displaced.
  • Not refugees or holders of subsidiary protection status.

Track 2: Researchers Already in the EU

  • Non-EU citizens with recognized refugee/subsidiary protection status.
  • Holders of temporary permits/visas outside the formal refugee process.

Fellowship Details

  • Host Institutions: Academic or research organizations in EU Member States.
  • Number of Fellowships: 60.
  • Duration: Up to 24 months.
  • Funding: Fully funded.

Eligibility Requirements for Researchers

  • Be a doctoral candidate or hold a PhD at the start of the fellowship.
  • Face or have recently faced qualifying risks.
  • Be a non-EU citizen.
  • Possess the language skills required by the host institution.
  • Submit an ethics checklist with the application.

Evaluation and Selection Process

A six-step process ensures transparency and fairness:

  1. Eligibility Check.
  2. Preliminary Assessment.
  3. External Evaluation.
  4. Final Selection.
  5. Notification of Results to Host Institutions.
  6. Signing of Fellowship Agreements.

Application Process

  • Deadline: January 20, 2025.
  • Applications must be submitted by EU-based host institutions on behalf of eligible researchers.
  • Each institution may submit only one application.
