The Hatfield Lioness Scholarship at Durham University provides an exceptional opportunity for women from developing countries to pursue a fully funded postgraduate degree in the UK. Established in 2018 to celebrate 30 years of women at Hatfield College, the scholarship is supported by alumni, friends of the college, and other benefactors committed to expanding access to higher education.

This prestigious scholarship aims to empower talented women by enabling them to acquire advanced knowledge and skills, which they can later apply to benefit their home countries.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a woman from one of the eligible developing countries (full list below).
  • Have received an unconditional offer for a full-time taught Master’s degree at Durham University by June 2025 (excluding MBA, PhD, and research-based Master’s programs).
  • Meet all entry requirements, including an honours degree and an English language qualification.
  • Not hold a Master’s degree already.
  • Lack the financial means to fund a Master’s degree in the UK.
  • Not receive any other scholarship funding.

Eligible Countries Include:

Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Honduras, Kenya, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Micronesia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, West Bank and Gaza, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Scholarship Benefits

The Hatfield Lioness Scholarship covers:

• Full tuition fees at Durham University.

• Living expenses stipend.

• Accommodation at Hatfield College (self-catered or fully catered).

• Return economy airfare from home country to the UK.

• Transport costs between the UK airport and Durham City.

• Settling-in allowance upon arrival.

• UK visa fees and UK health surcharge.

Restrictions:

• The scholarship does not fund dependents or additional travel expenses.

• Accommodation is for the scholarship holder only (dependents cannot be accommodated).

Application Process

Stage 1: Apply for Admission to Durham University

• Submit an academic application for your chosen Master’s program at Durham University.

• Clearly reference your intention to apply for the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship in your university application.

Stage 2: Apply for the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship HERE 

• Complete the scholarship application form and submit all required documents via email to hatfield.development@durham.ac.uk by March 31, 2025.

Required documents include:

• Durham University offer letter.

• Academic transcripts.

• References (must meet specified criteria).

• IELTS certificate (if applicable).

Application Deadline: March 31, 2025.

Results Announcement: Mid-June 2025.
