Fully Funded PhD Scholarship in International Relations and Conflict Studies – University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp, a leading international research institution, is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences. This opportunity is part of the ‘Tracing the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare’ project, funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). The project examines the development and deployment of algorithmic warfare technologies and their impact on civilian harm, focusing on Ukraine and Gaza.
Position Overview
As a PhD researcher, you will:
- Develop and defend a doctoral thesis in International Relations and Conflict Studies.
- Conduct independent and collaborative field research, analyzing the roles and experiences of actors involved in algorithmic warfare.
- Define and trace the reverberating and compounding civilian harm caused by these technologies.
- Collaborate with supervisors, peers, and international research teams.
- Contribute to academic publications, conferences, workshops, and science communication.
- Engage with policy stakeholders and civil society partners.
- Carry out limited teaching and support tasks within the International Politics research group at University of Antwerp and the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare program at Utrecht University.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master’s degree in International Relations, Conflict Studies, Anthropology, or a related field (including AI politics and governance).
- Strong academic performance with excellent study results.
- Experience in qualitative research, including interviews, participant observation, or open-source investigations in military or conflict contexts.
- Knowledge of algorithmic warfare technologies and their civilian harm effects is an advantage.
- Ability to collaborate on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
- Interest in public engagement activities, such as media appearances, writing op-eds, and creating infographics or podcasts.
- Fluent in English (additional fluency in Dutch, Ukrainian, or Arabic is a plus).
- Strong research and teaching competencies in line with University of Antwerp’s academic policies.
Scholarship Benefits
- Duration: 2 years, with possible renewal for another 2 years upon positive evaluation.
- Start Date: September 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.
- Monthly stipend in line with doctoral scholarship rates.
