Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is looking for a passionate data scientist to join its Global Research and Data Science (GRDS) team. This is a unique opportunity to blend your technical skills with a mission to improve the lives of vulnerable populations worldwide. Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Data Scientist at IPA, your work will be split between technical development and project support. Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Technical Development & Data Modeling (60%)

  • Design and maintain SQL and Python data models for research applications.
  • Develop innovative code for research tools and data-driven software solutions.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Contribute to IPA’s research resources to ensure timely and effective project delivery.

Project Support & Stakeholder Engagement (40%)

  • Provide technical support to IPA’s research projects, collaborating with country offices, policy teams, and sector programs.
  • Prepare and present regular project updates, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to internal stakeholders.
  • Analyze various data sets and communicate actionable insights to both internal and external audiences.

What We’re Looking For

To thrive in this role, you should have the following skills and qualifications:

Required Skills:

  • 2+ years of experience in data science or data engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python for developing data science projects.
  • Expertise in SQL for data querying and analysis.
  • Familiarity with Git and other version control systems.
  • Experience integrating data sources via APIs.
  • Strong ability to thrive in multicultural environments.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related fields (or equivalent).

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Familiarity with tools for data engineering such as dlt, SQLMesh, or dbt.
  • Proficiency in econometric software like R or Stata.
  • Experience with international development organizations or research institutions.
  • Fluency in Spanish, French, or Swahili is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an eye for detail.
  • Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Asana.

Work Model & Location

  • Hybrid work model: Mix of remote work and office collaboration.
  • International travel: 1-2 times per year.
  • Locations: Kenya, Ghana, Colombia, Mexico, Nigeria.
