The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme (WGWVFP) at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute offers an exceptional opportunity to engage in impactful, policy-relevant research while being fully immersed in a leading regional think tank.

Launched in honour of Professor Wang Gungwu, the former Chairman of ISEAS’ Board of Trustees, this programme supports promising thought leaders dedicated to advancing Southeast Asia’s understanding of big-power dynamics and regional cooperation.

Key Research Focus Areas

Applicants should align their research with one or more of the following themes:

  • US-China relations and implications for Southeast Asia
  • Asia-Pacific security challenges (e.g. South China Sea, China-ASEAN ties)
  • Regional economic integration efforts (e.g. Belt and Road Initiative, RCEP)
  • The rise of China and its societal impacts on Southeast Asian communities
  • Digital media and tech diplomacy in shaping public perception across the region

Fellowship Duration & Structure

  • Length: Minimum of 2 months, up to 6 months
  • Fellows must be in-residence at ISEAS (Singapore) throughout their program
  • Fellowship tenure subject to ISEAS approval
  • Expected Contributions

Successful fellows will:

  • Publish in ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum
  • Present research findings at an in-house seminar
  • Join a regional scholarly network with opportunities to continue engaging beyond their residency

Who Should Apply?

The programme welcomes:

  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Mid-career policymakers, even without a Ph.D., provided they have solid experience and relevant research interests
