ANU Research Scholarships: Funding Excellence in Higher Degree Research

Each year, the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training provides funding for universities to award scholarships to domestic and international students pursuing Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs. At the Australian National University (ANU), these scholarships are offered through two central annual rounds, including the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, the University Research Scholarship, and other centrally managed funding opportunities.
These scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and provide financial support for outstanding research students.
Key Scholarship Rounds & Deadlines
Scholarship Round Application Deadline Commencement Period
- Round 1 (International) August 31 (each year) January – March (following year)
- Round 1 (Domestic) October 31 (each year) January – March (following year)
- Round 2 (International & Domestic) April 15 (each year) Up to August (same year)
• Round 1 is divided into two parts: one for international candidates and one for domestic candidates.
• Round 2 is a smaller round, typically allowing scholarship commencement up to August of the same year.
• Current HDR candidates (enrolled for less than a year full-time equivalent) can also apply by submitting the ‘Request for a Current ANU Student to be Considered for an HDR Scholarship’ form.
Scholarship Benefits
- Value: $38,154 per annum
- Duration: 3.5 years (with a possible 6-month extension)
- Payment: Fortnightly stipends

- Open to domestic, international, current, and prospective students
- Applicable to postgraduate research candidates

- Continuation is subject to academic performance
