Nestled in the vibrant seaside suburb of Muizenberg, Cape Town, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa is more than just a hub for mathematical excellence. Surrounded by beaches and mountains, this immersive institute brings together surfers, artists, and mathematicians under one roof.
Referred to as the “monastery of mathematics,” AIMS creates a collaborative environment where students, visiting lecturers, and researchers live, study, and socialize together.
About the Program
The Master’s in Mathematical Sciences, featuring the AI for Science program, is a one-year residential program designed to leverage AI for tackling today’s scientific challenges.
Program Structure
1. Advanced Topics: Foundational Course
- Duration: 10 weeks
- Includes seven core courses.
2. Advanced Topics: Review Courses
- Duration: 18 weeks (six blocks, each lasting three weeks).
- Students choose 11 out of 18 specialized courses.
3. Research Project
- Duration: 12 weeks.
- A research dissertation starts after completing review courses.
The next academic year runs from September 2025 to July 2026, marking the program’s third year of excellence.

Graduates will receive a Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences from the founding South African universities.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, you must:
- Be a resident and citizen of Africa (exceptions apply for those displaced by war).
- Have completed:
- A four-year undergraduate degree OR
- A three-year degree with an additional honors year by August 2025 (December 2025 for Southern African applicants).
- Not have previously held an AIMS scholarship.
- Have a strong foundation in computational and mathematical fields (e.g., physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering).
