The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme is dedicated to strengthening higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, empowering them to drive sustainable development. This initiative offers scholarships for development-related Master’s and PhD studies, targeting individuals aspiring to careers in teaching and research within higher education institutions across the region.

Who Should Apply?

  • Graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa:
    • Master’s Applicants: Must hold a first academic degree.
    • PhD Applicants: Must possess a Master’s degree.
  • Applicants aiming to pursue studies:
    • In their home country (In-Country scholarships).
    • In another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships).
  • Special Encouragement: Female candidates and individuals from less privileged regions or groups are highly encouraged to apply.

Note:

For South African students seeking In-Country scholarships, applications are managed separately through a collaboration between DAAD and the NRF.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Monthly Stipend: To cover living expenses.
  • Study and Research Allowance: Financial support for academic materials.
  • Thesis Publication Costs: Assistance with publishing expenses.
  • Tuition Fees: Coverage of educational costs.Additional Benefits for In-Region Scholarship Holders:
  • Travel Allowance: Support for transportation expenses.

Duration of Funding

  • Master’s Programmes: Up to two years.
  • PhD Programmes: Up to three years.
