LISER, the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research, is offering exciting PhD opportunities funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) through the AFR Grant Program. This program is ideal for motivated candidates who are passionate about addressing global challenges and conducting impactful research in collaboration with prestigious institutions such as the University of Luxembourg and other international universities.
Available Research Areas
LISER is looking for PhD candidates in the following research areas:
- Modeling Climate Migration and Its Evolution
Supervisors: Prof. Christina Gathmann, Dr. Michal Burzynski
Develop advanced spatial models to study climate-induced migration and explore future policies for mitigation and adaptation. This project includes collaboration with the UN, World Bank, and European institutions.
- AI and the Green Transition in the Labor Market
Supervisors: Prof. Christina Gathmann, Dr. Joël Machado
Extend frameworks for modeling workers’ transitions across sectors amid technological and structural changes, including AI and green transitions, and analyze implications for labor markets and welfare systems.
- Access to Healthcare for Vulnerable Populations
Supervisor: Dr. Valerie Moran
Investigate healthcare access issues for vulnerable groups such as women, immigrants, and those with lower socio-economic status, aiming to improve access and understand barriers.
- Attitudes Towards Redistribution, Inequality, and Taxation
Supervisor: Prof. Javier Olivera
Use experimental methods and surveys to explore public attitudes on redistribution, inequality, and taxation, particularly around inheritance taxes.
- Economic and Social Inclusion for People with Disabilities
Supervisor: Prof. Marc Suhrcke
Evaluate policies aimed at improving inclusion in the labor market and society for individuals with disabilities, in alignment with the UNCRPD.
Candidate Profile
LISER welcomes applications from individuals with:
- A Master’s degree (or expected completion) in economics, sociology, data science, or related fields.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- A passion for research and critical thinking.

- Salary: Competitive remuneration based on the Collective Labour Agreement, with a contract duration of 3+1 years.

- A relevant written document (e.g., working paper, thesis chapter).
- Copies of relevant diplomas and transcripts.
- Two academic reference letters.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for virtual interviews in January 2025.
The AFR grant application deadline is March 12, 2025 (14:00 CET), with applicants informed about the funding decision by July 2025.
