About the Programme

The Hertie School of Governance Doctoral Programme offers exceptional candidates the opportunity to engage in advanced research in governance, a dynamic and interdisciplinary field combining economics, political science, law, sociology, and public administration.

The 3-year programme (180 ECTS), conducted in English, begins every September with a cohort of 10 PhD students, preparing them for academic and policy-oriented careers.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a strong master’s degree (or equivalent) in economics, law, political science, sociology, public administration, management, or related fields.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in understanding fundamental governance issues.
  • Be open to interdisciplinary research and comparative perspectives.
  • Submit a well-aligned research proposal.

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed in two stages:

  • Initial screening of academic qualifications and application materials.
  • Two internal reviewers assess:
  • Quality and relevance of the research proposal.
  • Academic performance and references.
  • CV and motivation letter.
