SWWDTP2 Doctoral Studentships 2025: Apply Now for an Exciting Research Opportunity

The South, West, and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWWDTP2) invites applications for studentships starting in October 2025. The application window opens on Monday, 25 November 2024, and closes on Monday, 20 January 2025. This may be the final round of student-led applications under the current DTP scheme.

Key Highlights
1. Final Student-Led Application
- Likely the last round before AHRC transitions to the Landscape Awards scheme.
- Research proposals focusing on equality, diversity, and inclusion are strongly encouraged..
2.Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs
- No new CDA projects will be invited.
- Supervisors can resubmit unsuccessful projects from last year.
3. Eligibility
- Open to international and domestic students for full- or part-time study (minimum 50% rate for part-time).
- Applicants must hold a first degree, ideally with a Master’s or equivalent experience.
4. Diversity Initiative
- Targeting increased representation from underrepresented communities, aiming to award at least five studentships.
5. Funding & Duration
- Covers tuition fees (up to UK Home fee rate for international students) and maintenance awards aligned with UKRI rates.
- Duration: 3 years and 8 months (part-time equivalent possible). Extensions allowed under certain conditions.
6. Types of Studentships
- Student-Led Awards: Candidates propose their own research with two supervisors from different institutions.
- Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs): Pre-defined projects with external partners.
Application Process
1. Prepare a Research Proposal: Include the following:
- Title & Research Problem: Define your research questions and their relevance.
- Context & Literature Review: Outline existing work and identify gaps your research addresses.
- Methods: Describe your research methods and justify their appropriateness.
- Outcomes: Detail potential impacts beyond your thesis, like public engagement or policy contributions.
- Timeline: A provisional schedule for the PhD duration.
- Costs: Estimate research-related expenses.
- Bibliography: Submit a separate, cited reference list.
2. For Creative/Practice-Based Applicants:
- Detail planned creative outputs with academic analysis and provide samples (e.g., portfolios).
3. SWWDTP2 Alignment Statement (max 300 words):
- Explain how your project aligns with SWWDTP’s training, interdisciplinary focus, and community engagement.
4. Submit via Online System:
- Ensure all required documents are uploaded by 20 January 2025, as submissions cannot be edited afterward.
Assessment & Timeline
- Assessment Criteria: Research quality, readiness for doctoral study, supervision fit, and alignment with SWWDTP themes.
- Interviews: Held in late January and early February 2025
